Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

CLEVELAND (AP) — Will Brennan only tried to hit the ball. What happened after that wasn’t by design.Cleveland’s rookie outfielder hit a hard grounder that accidentally killed a bird wandering on the infield grass during the second inning of the Guardians’ 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. With none out and a runner at first base, Brennan, a left-handed hitter, went the other way with a 92.6 mph fastball from Chicago’s Jesse Scholtens. The liner connected with a small bird who had wandered into a dangerous place. The ball, clocked at 100.1 mph, sent the bird flying, and when Brennan got to first he reacted by putting his hands on his helmet and grimacing. Umpires called time, allowing a member of the groundcrew could remove the dead bird with a shovel.Following the game, Brennan posted an apology on Twitter to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).“I truly am sorry @peta and bird enthusiasts,” Brennan wrote. “An unfortunate sacrifice.”It’s the second ...

New Amazon palm readers to verify age, pay at Coors Field

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

DENVER (KDVR) — Coors Field, along with Aramark Sports Entertainment and Amazon, implemented a way to pay and show you're of drinking age during Rockies games. The new technology is Amazon One and it's already being used at other retailers, like Amazon-owned Whole Foods. It uses your palm to verify identification and lets you pay by hovering your hand over the screen. Where do miller moths hide during the day? It's a fast-paced technology that Aramark — the official food, beverage and retail provider at Coors Field — suggested will help drink lines move."Our hope is that everybody enrolls and sees that benefit so that the lines in general move really fast, so that you can get back to the action," said Alicia Woznicki, Aramark's vice president of design and development. "And I think what we have been doing is piloting a number of frictionless technologies like these stores, like our automated self-checkout, and what we are noticing when you take out all of that friction, that one la...

How Biden got to yes on F-16s and Ukraine

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

For more than a year, Kyiv has asked for modern fighter jets, and the Biden administration’s answer has either been “no,” or “not right now.”That changed late last week, when President Joe Biden told allies that he would support an international coalition to train Ukrainian pilots on Western fighters, paving the way for modern jets to one day be transferred to the front line.A key turning point came in the last few weeks, when the West finished delivering the vast majority of equipment Ukraine needed for a planned spring counteroffensive. The coalition of countries supporting Ukraine has shuttled tons of heavy weaponry, including sophisticated air defense systems and armored vehicles, to the battlefield to help Kyiv repel Russian forces. With that milestone in the rearview mirror, the group turned its attention to equipping Ukraine for the long term. The first step on that path: training Ukrainian pilots to fly modern fighter jets. The decision on jets is the latest move in what has b...

Dear Abby: All I want is a gluten-free kiss

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

Dear Abby: I struggled for years with vomiting and nausea, as well as other digestive issues I dismissed as having a “sensitive stomach.” When my fiance, “Marc,” and I started dating, he urged me to find out the cause of my issues. Six months ago, I was diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that is managed through a gluten-free diet.Marc has been incredibly supportive, and our kitchen is mostly gluten-free. I can get fairly sick, so we are pretty careful. There’s just one issue: I can get cross-contaminated if he kisses me after eating gluten, and he does eat gluten quite often. It can be resolved if he brushes his teeth thoroughly, but he brushes his teeth only every two or three days.Marc is a grown man, and while we’ve discussed it briefly from a health standpoint, I don’t want to be responsible for managing his oral hygiene. That needs to be his responsibility. I don’t know where to draw the line, though, without be...

Tanner Houck strikes out eight in brilliant outing, but Red Sox fall to Angels 2-1

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

It all nearly came undone in the second inning, when Tanner Houck faced a bases-loaded jam with three-time MVP Mike Trout coming to the plate. But the Red Sox starter struck out the Los Angeles Angels superstar to escape the jam with minimal damage, and from that point on Houck was off to the races.Coming off a stretch where he has frequently gotten crushed by opposing lineups the second and third times through the order, Houck got better as the night went on in what was without a doubt his best start of the season. He allowed one run over six innings while striking out eight, but the Red Sox bats couldn’t give him any run support and the Angels wound up earning the 2-1 win on a Mickey Moniak solo home run off Kutter Crawford in the eighth.“He did an outstanding job,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Houck. “Changing speeds, using his good slider, good fastball too, it was a good one for him.”Houck worked his way through an uneventful first before runni...

5 takeaways from AP’s series on health disparities impacting Black Americans

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

The Associated Press spent a year examining how racial health disparities have harmed generations of Black Americans. From birth to death, Black Americans fare worse in measures of health compared to their white counterparts. They have higher rates of infant and maternal mortality, higher incidence of asthma during childhood, more difficulty treating mental illness as teens, and higher rates of high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease and other illness as adults. Here are the key takeaways from each story:WHY ARE BLACK BABIES AND MOTHERS MORE LIKELY TO DIE?Black women have the highest maternal mortality rate in the United States — 69.9 per 100,000 live births for 2021, almost three times the rate for white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The 2021 rate was a significant increase from the prior year.Black babies are also more likely to die, and also far more likely to be born prematurely, setting the stage for health issues that could follow them th...

Medical racism in history causes health inequalities for Black Americans

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:51:07 GMT

The health inequities for Black Americans, documented in a series of stories by The Associated Press, have their roots in a long history of medical racism. The AP has collected a small sample of that history related to every phase of life.BIRTH: GYNECOLOGYJames Marion Sims, a 19th century Alabama surgeon heralded as the father of modern gynecology, pioneered a treatment for vesicovaginal fistulas, a condition that affects bladder control and fertility in women. Between 1845 and 1849, Sims carried out the once-experimental surgical treatment on a dozen enslaved women without the use of anesthesia. He has been both defended as a product of his era and panned as unethical and inhumane.Sims’ belief that Black people could endure more pain than white people is considered a form of racism and still present in the field of medicine. From medical school students of various racial and ethnic backgrounds to primary care providers of small and large practices, this bias has adversely impacted ...

Cars set on fire in Welsh capital as police face ‘large scale disorder’

LONDON (AP) — At least two cars were set ablaze and objects were hurled at police after a traffic accident Monday night in the Welsh capital Cardiff grew into what officials described as “large scale disorder.” Officers were called to the scene of a crash on Snowden Road in Ely district shortly after 6 p.m. Monday. Scenes livestreamed on YouTube showed dozens of people, many wearing hoods or balaclavas, milling around while others threw objects and shot off fireworks at a line of police officers with riot shields who were blocking one end of the street. At 8:21 p.m., South Wales Police urged people to leave the area and tweeted: “There is now a large number of officers working to manage the collision, but also to de-escalate ongoing disorder at the scene.” An hour later, police said emergency services remained at the scene and reiterated the importance of people staying away from the area. The force added: “Please avoid speculation – we will bring you the latest details ...
