Opinion: When is hate mail a threat or harassment and when is it free speech?

“Your (sic) an idiot.” That’s often what passes for thoughtful criticism on social media. Occasionally, though, critics’ opprobrium turns menacing. “It would be a shame if something bad happened to you,” and other variations on that theme, was what I received after my column about crossing a picket line ran, along with pictures of dead rats and people getting beaten up.Such vague threats have arrived by snail mail, as well. In one case involving multiple contacts, I had to contact the police. It’s an occupational hazard for any public figure.Prosecuting threatening speech just got a bit more difficult after last week’s Supreme Court ruling in Counterman v Colorado. As a media commentator and as a target of hostile comments, the ruling elicits mixed feelings.Threats can chill free speech by making targets fearful of expressing opinions. Such speech also pollutes social media and drives decent people away from public forums. On the other hand, prosecution of threatening speech can cre...

However, Tickner left the band after they released their debut album to attend Stanford Medical School on a full scholarship. Journey's commercial success c...

Earth records back-to-back-to-back hottest days ever: What does it mean?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:09:59 GMT

Earth’s average temperature on Wednesday remained at an unofficial record high set the day before, the latest grim milestone in a week that has seen a series of climate-change-driven extremes. The average global temperature was 17.18 Celsius (62.9 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, a tool that uses satellite data and computer simulations to measure the world’s condition. That matched a record set Tuesday, and came after a previous record of 17.01 Celsius (62.6 degrees Fahrenheit) was set Monday. While the figures are not an official government record, “this is showing us an indication of where we are right now,” said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief scientist Sarah Kapnick. And NOAA indicated it will take the figures into consideration for its official record calculations.Scientists generally use much longer measurements — months, years, decades — to track the Earth’s warming, but the daily highs are an indication that ...

Review: Dynamic dancing drives this S.F. ‘Chorus Line’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:09:59 GMT

Who knew a musical about auditioning for a musical would become such a phenomenon? But “A Chorus Line,” the now-classic musical that recently opened at San Francisco Playhouse, is nothing if not a singular sensation. There was nothing like “A Chorus Line” when the musical debuted in 1975. Inspired by taped conversations with actual Broadway dancers, some of whom were in the original cast, the show alternates between terrific synchronized dance numbers, as the dancers learn their steps, and heartfelt confessionals about the cast members’ lives, bizarrely solicited by the director as part of the audition process.Starting at New York’s Public Theater in April 1975, it quickly moved to Broadway, where its original production ran for 15 years. The show won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1976.“A Chorus Line” is indelibly associated with its original director/choreographer, Michael Bennett, who’s also credited with conceiving the play. With a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nich...
