Texas GOP revives 'Border Protection Unit' after Democratic delay

AUSTIN (Nexstar) -- The Texas House early Wednesday morning passed a provision to establish the state's own border patrol force after Democrats came close to killing the measure on a procedural objection. House Bill 20 by Tyler Republican Matt Schaefer would have created the "Border Protection Unit" as a new agency under the Texas Department of Public Safety. Officers in that unit would have the authority to arrest unlawful border crossers, build border barriers, search vehicles, use force against cartels and more. Their jurisdiction would extend not just to border areas, but to every part of the state.Dallas Democrat Rafael Anchia made a parliamentary move to block the bill during a late-night session Tuesday in the Texas House. A series of West Seventh Street businesses have petitioned to join the St. Paul Downtown Improvement District, a dues-based business association that employs greeters, or street team ambassadors, and provides services like trash and graffiti clean-up.It likey will take several weeks for the St. Paul City Council to officially approve the new district boundaries up to Grand Avenue, which come with financial considerations for businesses within the area. Still, some services already rolled out on May 1 through leftover grant funding provided last year by the Knight Foundation.Those services include a link to the downtown Safety Communications Center, a civilian public safety hub in the 401 Robert St. building that works closely with St. Paul Police as it coordinates private security teams. STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. (NEWS10) -- According to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office, a Stockbridge man was sentenced to five years probation with conditions after pleading guilty to several charges. Joseph Smith, 45, pleaded guilty to several charges stemming from a 2020 investigation involving pictures of an underage female. LOUIS (AP) — A doctor from Kansas admitted Tuesday to a role in a telemedicine fraud scheme for unnecessarily ordering genetic testing and orthotic braces, defrauding Medicare of about $16 million.Gautam Jayaswal, 64, of Overland Park, Kansas, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud. He could face up to five years in prison and must repay the money.The U.S. Attorney's Office in St. Louis said Jayaswal contracted with several companies from 2017 to 2021 to work as a telemedicine doctor.
